Simple Tip: Determining your Face Shape (with Pictures)

Have you ever wonder why one hairstyle looks fab on someone but looks lousy on you? Or how a similar shades/ eyeglass looks stunning on someone else but awkward on you?

There may be several reasons behind it but one factor that affects it is your face shape.

Here's how to determine what face shape you have. All you need is a mirror, measuring tape and a pen and paper to jot down the measurements. But you can skip the pen and paper if your memory is sharp to remember those numbers. So let's get started:

Measure across the top of your cheek bones. Place the end of the tape measure just past the outer corner of your eye. This is the start point. Then carefully lay the tape measure in a straight across the bridge of your nose to just past the outer corner of your other eye. This is your end point of measurement. The tape measure should be resting on the top of the apples of your cheeks, or just on top of your cheekbones. Record your measurement.

Measure your jawline. Measure across the widest part of your jaw to the center of your chin. Multiply the measurement by two and again, record it.

Measure your forehead. Place the start point of the measuring tape on one side of your forehead at the widest point (usually halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline). Run the measuring tape along the forehead until you come to the same point on the opposite side of your head. Record down.

Finally measure the length of your face. Start at the middle of your hairline. Run the measuring tape down your face, over your nose, to the tip of your chin.

From your notes, you can now determine your face shape as follows:
  • Round face: Your face is as wide as it is long. This may vary a little but generally the measurement is close.
  • Oblong face: Longer than it is wide.
  • Heart face: Narrow at jaw line, wide at cheekbones/ and or forehead.
  • Square: The face is as wide as it is long but more angular than the round face. The jawline may also be sharper.
Basing on these numbers, I have an oblong face since my face is longer than it's width.

Have you discovered what face shape do you have? I would love to know what the results are through the comments below.
